It's summertime!!!!! Most school counselors have about 3 - 7 weeks left of vacation. If you are a planner, then you are thinking of what types of professional development you can complete during the summer or for the upcoming school year that will enhance your skills and meet your school district's/division's requirements. I love professional development! I love teaching it. I love participating in it. I love finding it! Lately, I have come to love webinars. Why? Because you can watch them at your leisure...be it on the beach, after the kids go to sleep, on the deck with a glass of wine or while traveling on the plane or train. While most live webinars provide a certificate after completion; most recorded webinars do not. So you may want to ask your school division or principal if you can write a 300 - 500 word summary on the webinar as proof that you participated in the activity.
Nonetheless, you will want to take advantage of these FREE professional development opportunities...whenever and wherever you can!
Free Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum Training
(They have an elementary, middle and high school level)
Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute
(If you sign up for their emails, they will send you a free webinar every month with a certificate)
Suicide Prevention Resource Center
(After watching these videos, you can apply for CE credits)
National Federation of State High School Associations
(They have great free and pay webinars)
(Although this is for parents, school counselors can learn a lot as well)
GLSEN Education Webinars
(Be sure to click the link for the free research webinars, too)
Darkness to Light
(Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training Online - $10)
National Center for Homeless Education
(Great videos on how to assist our homeless students)
Also, all of the counseling related organizations offer live and recorded webinars. Some are free for members or have a nominal fee. Non-members can watch for a cost. ASCA, CollegeBoard, ACA, ACT, NACAC and CSI have live and recorded webinars that can serve the professional development needs of school counselors. Moreover, all of your school counseling organizations have annual conferences and some offer trainings throughout the year that can quench the thirst you may have for PD.
Today, one should NEVER have an excuse regarding the lack of professional development opportunities afforded to them. If you employer cannot provide them for you, there is no reason you should not be able to provide them for yourself. Just be extraordinary!
